This week, it was its turn for a new life. I pulled out the drawers to begin wiping them down and was almost knocked over by the smell. That thrift store smell. Sunshine — After wiping down my piece to get off the majority of the dust and the crud, I like to sun it. Mother Nature works in mysterious ways, and direct sunshine often goes a long way in getting rid of the thrift store odor. I generally lay out a painting tarp to protect the wood from any moisture in the grass and leave it there for as long as possible. Separate the drawers from the dresser and turn the dresser on its back so that the sun reaches the inside. I was inpatient with this piece and only left it out for an afternoon, but a few days would have been ideal.
GALERIE J. KUGEL
Dad believed in a big bang theory when it came to stretching a dollar. If he ever walked through another life style, it had existed years before I was born. Suspicions ran rampant that in his early years, Dad had been a big spender, judging from the quality of antique furniture that made its home with us. We lived in a two story cottage in Upper Darby, a northern neighborhood in the city of liberty, Philadelphia. Beds of rose bushes lined the front walkway to our home.
I remember Dad stopping on the sidewalk each morning on his way to work, picking a new rose and placing it into his suit lapel.
Dating an antique is a little like detective work. The company name itself only gives the appraiser a rough timeline of when the company was known to operate. Other factors such as the colour of the mark, how it’s applied or the numbered codes within the design can often date a piece to the exact year it was produced and tell you where or who the specific artist was.

Buyers Guide Antique Wardrobes Wardrobes have been a convenient storage solution for centuries. A standalone piece can be a real statement item of furniture. A wardrobe is both functional and practical, whilst being full of character and adding an element of charm from the past to a room. Wardrobes are very similar to an armoire. An armoire being the French word used to describe a standing closet that stores primarily clothing but also a range of materials and household goods.
An armoire is generally larger than a wardrobe and more detailed in its design.

My primary focus is now restricted to artisan dollhouse miniatures with a few exceptions here and there. In my previous home, many of my houses were displayed in one upstairs room where I painted a Rufus Porter-style mural around three sides of the room. One wall was copied from the mural that appears in the Tynietoy mansion while the other walls feature scenes from the Delaware Valley landscape where I lived with my husband and troublesome cat on the north side of the Musconetcong Mountain.
We have found the extended commuting time an issue for my husband and have decided to move closer to NYC. We are in the process of preparing to move again and I expect to have a more fully equipped studio at our new home.

Our Stock # LFA This is an antique French armoire dating to c Beneath a modest crown moulding, magnificent profusely carved panels decorate this substantial armoire, decorated with stylised foliate detail in reciprocating geometric form.
We would estimate it to date from the early twentieth century. The armoire has an upper drawer with a carved front, which retains its decorative brass handles and escutcheon. Below this are two doors which open to reveal a cupboard section with a hanging rail at the top and a lower removable wooden shelf. The doors retain their decorative escutcheons a later wardrobe lock, but please note that no key is present. The armoire is supported on squat legs at the front and square legs at the back.
Condition Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition, with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing, knocking and wear to the woodwork as might be expected, and the piece is overall a little faded. There would have been decorative mouldings attached at the sides beside the drawer and the tops of the doors, but these are missing and the wood here is a slightly different colour. The shelf inside the cupboard section has a section cut out at the front near the middle.

However, learning a few basic tips and tricks used by experienced antique collectors and dealers will give even a novice collector the general knowledge needed to identify a piece of antique furniture. Tips for Identifying Antique Furniture There are several things to look for when examining a piece of furniture that help to identify it as an antique. Check for a signature or label from the furniture maker. Make sure the piece is in proportion. For example, if the legs of the piece seem to be the wrong size or the top of the piece is out of balance with the lower portion, it is possible the furniture is a marriage.
A furniture marriage occurs when two pieces, or sections, of furniture are joined together and the two are not originally from the same piece. Check the construction of the joints.
